TJ: What’s your favorite Jonas Brothers song?

J: Australia. [Laughs] We love that song. We sing it all the time. I have like a car [mix CD] when I used to drive around L.A. and that [song] used to be on it with like Muse and The Cure and then the Jonas Brothers would come on and all my friends would go, “Uuuumm, okay!” and I’d be like, “Dude, you gotta hear this song. It’s awesome,” and all my friends loved it. They’re all like, “Yeah, this is rad!”

TJ: [Laughs] So, Nick is underage and we hear Joe may be dating Taylor Swift. Any chance you’d hook up with Kevin?

J: [Laughs] Aww! You know what? They’re all such beautiful and good looking boys but we’re all just mates, so I think we might just keep that as that, but we’ll be hanging out with them for sure. That’ll be fun.

TJ: Gonna pull any pranks on them?

J: Probably. We’re gonna see how mischievous they get first and kind of let them set the guidelines and then go for gold I think.

Y our daughter would rather be grounded for a month than miss the Jonas Brothers sold-out concert on Sunday in Tinley Park?

Still pulling your hair out because you paid 10 times what any sane person would consider reasonable so that your kid could attend one of Miley Cyrus’ sold-out “Hannah Montana” concerts last year?

Parents may not fully understand, but to a nation of adolescents, Cyrus and the Jonas boys aren’t just pop acts. They’re 24/7 obsessions. To a legion of business execs presiding over a slumping industry, they are trend-defying sales juggernauts. And to culture-watchers, they are the latest in a series of teen-pop acts dating back to Ricky Nelson who serve as a generation’s musical rite of passage.

The latest Jonas Brothers album, “A Little Bit Longer” (Hollywood), is shaping up as one of the year’s best-selling rock releases. It debuted at No. 1 last week with 525,000 discs sold, following up its 1.3 million-selling 2007 self-titled predecessor, which rose to No. 10—the first time any artist has had two albums in the top 10 simultaneously in nine years. The new album includes an unprecedented three straight hits that generated more than 100,000 downloads each at the iTunes store. A few weeks earlier, Cyrus’ second album, “Breakout” (Hollywood), also debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart with more than 370,000 sales, the biggest week this year by a female artist not named Mariah Carey.

The brothers – Kevin (20), Joe (19) and Nick (15) are only the second fraternal duo to reach number one in chart history – the first being the Bee Gees.

The buzz around The Jonas Brothers has grown rapidly. Their 2006 debut It’s About Time debuted and peaked at number 91; their self-titled second album debuted and peaked at number five last year, but has sold 1,541,000 copies and climbs 11-10 this week. Their last two albums are on Disney’s Hollywood imprint but the New Jersey siblings’ introductory album was issued on Daylight/Columbia. Long deleted, it sells for funny money on Ebay – several copies sold recently for more than $200, including an autographed copy for $363.

Despite The Jonas Brothers’ album’s big debut, overall album sales last week, at just 7.33m, were 13.4% down on the same week in 2007, when another Disney album – High Schhol Musical 2 – was number one on sales of 615,000; 23.5% down on the same week in 2006, when Christina Aguilera’s Back To Basics was number one on sales of 346,000; and 29.8% down (nearly 3m sales) on the same week in 2005, when Hilary Duff – and Disney – were number one with Most Wanted on 208,000 sales.

“Jonas Brothers: Pure pop?” – Read More

The inevitable ascendance of the Jonas Brothers as the male tween-pop phenomenon of the moment was obvious when the group opened for Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus on her massive tour late last year.

“They’re cute, and I like some of their songs” — notably “Kids of the Future,” their reworking of Kim Wilde’s New Wave classic “Kids in America,” from the soundtrack of “Meet the Robinsons” — the astute young critic said. “But they’re not all that. I think you should trash them, Dad!”

The ecstatic screams that filled the Allstate Arena indicated that we were in the minority, however, and even louder was the behind-the-scenes grind of the massive Disney star-making and marketing machine, which already was cranking into high gear.

    Now, its success is manifest.

“The Jonas Brothers record album on the road” – Read More

The Jonas Brothers literally recorded their new album on the go – A Little Bit Longer was taped on their tour bus.

The trio of superstar siblings begged their managers to fit their van with a recording studio – so that they could record their third LP while on the road with teen sensation Miley Cyrus.

Youngest brother Nick Jonas explains, “We knew that we wouldn’t have much time (to record in a studio), because we were about to go shoot (Disney movie) Camp Rock, and right after that, we’d be on tour with Miley. So… we asked our management team, ‘How can we get into the studio to do this?’ We wound up bringing a tour bus out on the road that was retro-fitted to be a studio.”

But the travelling recording sessions were not without their technical glitches.

Jonas adds: “Obviously, there were some vocal things that needed to be redone, and some drums, because you’d have the generator of the bus in the background. So when we finished the tour, we went into the studio to make a couple of fixes here and there, and basically the rest of it was done!”

    The frenzy began early.

Fans of the Jonas Brothers started arriving at Nationwide Arena as early as 8:30 yesterday morning for a show scheduled to begin at 7 last night.

Statements on the fans’ T-shirts — all of them girls, toddler to teen — professed love and devotion (”Marry Me Nick”), mental distress (”Obsessive Jonas Disorder”) and breathless exclamations (”Oh My Jonas”).

The scene in the lobby of the Hyatt on Capitol Square was electric when, shortly after noon yesterday, the Jonases’ publicist met with reporters, photographers and cameramen who were to accompany the hugely popular, Walt Disney Co.-spawned boy band on a field trip to mess around in a flight simulator at NetJets headquarters near Port Columbus. (”The boys,” as their handlers call them, like to take field trips when time permits. Before their show Friday night at Blossom Music Center, it was the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum.)

“The dream teens: Jonas Brothers” – Read More

JoBros,” whose third CD, “A Little Bit Longer,” dropped Aug. 12, are the new Dream Teens. “Tiger Beat” sings their praises, as does “Rolling Stone,” which played up their image as “emo heartthrobs.” The Jonas tribe is signed to Disney’s Hollywood Records and also enjoys a multimillion-dollar touring deal with Live Nation. Says guitarist/drummer Nick, 15, of the Disney link: “You’d think we’d say we’re friends with all the “High School Musical” kids and people who are on Disney shows — but we really are!”

Like other boy bands, their songs are not poetic tapestries that stir the soul. “We write about what’s relevant to who we are and what’s real to us: either a relationship we went through, someone we like now or touring,” explains Joe, the 19-year-old lead vocalist. When asked to describe their sound, the response is equally simplistic: They create a “rock feel, overlaid with pop vocals.”

Nothing complicated, though they also cite Elvis Costello (who certainly qualifies as a complex composer and a critical darling) as an inspiration, and give props to Jefferson Starship, Prince and The Beatles. “There’s a lot of music we listened to growing up,” Joe says. “Our parents liked the Bee Gees.”
