The Jonas Brothers are back! They never went away, you say? Fair. But more specifically, they are back on top — of the music sales charts, at least, with their latest release, Lines, Vines, and Trying Times, which hit shelves a week ago. The band also just launched their latest tour last Saturday in Dallas (with a surprise visit from Miley Cyrus, but more on that in a bit).
In between tour dates and promoting their album, I managed to spend a few minutes on the phone with the brains behind the operation, youngest brother Nick Jonas, and here’s what he had to say about everything from his favorite song of the summer to his reaction after meeting President Barack Obama.
On having a No. 1 album twice:
“I think to have a No. 1 album is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. But to have it happen twice is just truly amazing, and we’re so thankful to the people who went out and got it. The fans make it possible.”
On his favorite new band, Honor Society, which is going on tour with the Jonas Brothers this summer:
“The thing that really got me about them is that not only are they a pop-rock band, but they also have some R&B vocal stylings. The lead singer, Mike Bruno, has got some of the same influences as me — Stevie Wonder and Prince. They’re trying to infuse those sounds into rock music, as well.”
On recently meeting President Barack Obama:
“You know, it was fairly brief. He said hello and thanks for playing for his daughters. I said it was a pleasure to meet him, he said, ‘You, too,’ and then we took a photo and that was it. But it was really cool to meet him.”
On the recent dust-up between will.i.am and Perez Hilton at the Much Music Video Awards:
“We weren’t around when it happened. We actually went back to the hotel and went to bed and woke up and saw some of what happened. But it’s an unfortunate incident. And I think that hopefully they’ll both work it out.”
On convincing ladyfriend Miley Cyrus to appear onstage at last Saturday’s tour kick-off to sing the duet “Before the Storm”:
“That song means a lot to both of us and to have the opportunity to play it live was great. It just came about. We were both excited about doing it.”
On his summer Must List:
“As far as music goes, there’s a band I liked a couple of years ago that I just recently rediscovered. I guess you can call it taking it off the shelf, kind of dusting it off. It’s a Boston-based band called Damone — kind of power-pop meets metal. It’s pretty good. There is a girl lead singer backed up by like five guys. It’s a really cool sound. I listened to it the other day again and just fell right back in love with it. There’s one particular song called “You’re the One,” and it’s fantastic.”
On the track from Lines, Vines, and Trying Times you should be listening to:
“A song called ‘Much Better.’ It’s got some buzz because its about something personal that we wrote about. It’s a great song, and I think it’s a prime example of one of those times when we were able to take something going on in our lives, write about it, and kind of infuse the Neil Diamond sound that we were talking about for this record. It’s got the horns on it, and it’s got a great, kind of feel-good vibe to it. If you listen to the song you get a pretty clear picture of what it’s about, but that’s kind of where I’ll leave it I guess.”

They’ve got hit records. They’ve starred in movies and on TV. And they’ve got perfect hair.
Ah, life is good for the Jonas Brothers. And on Sunday, the Pied Pipers of squealing ’tweener girls will be back in Tacoma, headlining the Tacoma Dome with cuts from their brand, spankin’ new album, “Lines, Vines and Trying Times.” Kevin, Joe and Nick Jonas held a conference call shortly after the tour was announced. And, from the transcript, here’s some of what they had to say about their new sound, having fans in the White House and getting ‘dissed on “South Park”:
Nick on musical influences: Some of our biggest influences in the writing process are people like Elvis Costello, Prince and Johnny Cash, and Neil Diamond is a new one. Also, the Zutons out of the UK and Kings of Leon.
We’ve been working on trying to use metaphors, in a way, to kind of mask a literal thing that happened to us. I think that, personally, Elvis Costello is excellent at doing that. And (we’re) listening to his music and trying to, you know, do our best to imitate that gift that he has of being able to tell a story with using metaphors.
Joe on the new album’s sound: It feels like just a good growth in our music, and it has a lot of more kinds of horns in the record and a lot more strings. Also, there’s more to the music rather than just a typical kind of relationship song.
We had the opportunity to write the songs for our new television show and that kind of helped us as writers kind of think out of the box. And so with our new record we kind of wanted to do the same, and that’s exactly what we are doing.
Nick on “Poison Ivy”: “Poison Ivy” is a song that we wrote with our bass player, Greg Barbowsky, who we wrote the song ‘Tonight’ with on our last album. And ‘Poison Ivy’ is really cool. It’s a metaphor for various things that have happened to us about maybe a relationship you can’t get out of or something that you’ve gone back to, even though it might not be the best thing in the world for you.
Joe on having Sasha and Malia Obama as fans: You know I’m sure if they would like to come we would be fine with them having tickets, for sure. And I’m sure they could probably get their own tickets without even – just magically. By July 13, actually, we’re going to be in Washington, D.C., doing a concert, so hopefully the family will come out to watch the show. I mean, they’re always invited and we’re very excited for the summer tour to make its way over there.
Nick on jamming with Stevie Wonder at the Grammys: Performing with Stevie Wonder was an experience that we’ll never forget and we’re very thankful. We know that we’re young guys and that that was really, truly an honor and we’re so thankful to him and his team for making it happen.
Kevin on secondary ticket brokers: We sell directly to our fans. You know, we have an initial presale straight to our fans to our fan club, and that comes straight, you know, to our fans. We want to do everything possible (to ensure) these tickets go directly to the people that want to see the show, no people that are just trying to profit from reselling a ticket.
Nick on being lampooned on an episode of “South Park”: I think we always like to, you know, be open to make fun of ourselves, you know, we’ll be the first to. We did it on “SNL” and it was kind of fun. But I think for us we’re so focused on what we’re doing with this tour and our album and everything that we didn’t have too much time to see it.
SPOTTED:Mr. Kevin Jonas Sr. was spotted at the Demi Lovato concert in Uniondale, NY (June 24th). Since he is part of Demi’s management, he was there to show his support and check up on how the tour was going. Some fans got to take photos with him and they been saying he was completely nice and took pictures with fans who wanted a photo with him. [From Nikki, Shannon and Carly]

We got an email regarding JB and LVATT being #1 on the Billboard charts!
The Jonas Brothers Lines Vines and Trying Times has debuted at #1 in it’s first week. Billboard has posted a message on the left side of their screen indicating the update, but they are using an outdated picture (from two albums ago) and they have still not updated the Billboard top 200 (which should show the Jonas Brothers at #1).
There are also a ton of negative, hateful comments against the Jonas Brothers. I am urging fans to go the Billboard Website at www.billboard.com and click on the story (Jonas Brothers Album debuts at #1). Make sure you leave positive and supportive comments regarding the new album. Please disregard all the haters.
Also, go to the bottom of the page and click on “contact us”. Please e-mail the editor and urge her to keep the website up to date. It should show a CURRENT picture of Lines Vines and Trying Times and list them as #1 on the charts. Just putting a snippet story on the side of the page is unfair to the Jonas Brothers as artists.
